It’s cold here! Weather.com was clearly wrong when it told me we would be in the high 70′s. Let me tell you, t-shirts, jeans and sandals just do not cut it when it’s cold in the desert. So here I am, a nice shirt, sweatpants and socks, debating whether or not I plan on stepping out in this gettup.
If you’re wondering exactly where I’m at, my husband and I are visiting his family in Lancaster, CA. Our visit originally was to come and spend some time with his grandfather, who had been diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. Being 85, surgery and chemo where out of the question, as far as he was concerned. Since then, it was just a waiting game.
Sadly, he passed away last Wednesday. We got the news an hour after we got back home from trick-or-treating with a friend of ours kids. My husband was very close to his grandfather, being named after him, and therefore quite devastated.
His funeral isn’t until Wednesday and we will be here a week. So here we are, getting ready to visit a gem show…grasping at things to do to keep the family occupied. The great thing is that while grandpa was greatly loved, they don’t seem emotional about his death. I suspect that the initial shock of his passing and the sorrow felt at the time has given way to the acceptance stage of dealing with a death. It makes me glad though, that they are some what functional and not as “lost” as my mom seemed when my father passed away earlier this year.
So off I go to finish getting ready for the show. With any luck, we will all be entertained and diverted, until we’re ready to sit down and have a sob fest while sharing wonderful stories of Grandpa. I’m sure there will be a lot of reminiscing this evening over some carne asada.
