Re-Learning the Ropes: Freezing Time

On February 6, 2013 by Yazmin

The freezing time lesson from DigitalCamFan was tons of fun. I was having a hard time deciding on what to shoot, when an opportunity presented itself to me.

My husband started throwing our little girl up in the air. (I ended up using one of those photos for my Project 365 last week, but I’m sure you won’t mind if I use it again for this post.)

Going Up?

Going Up?

Coming down...

Coming down…

Gotcha!

Gotcha!

As I eluded to, my monkey flying was not part of my shooting plans for that moment, so my settings weren’t perfect for freezing time. These were all shot at 1/500 secs at f/1.8 with an ISO of 5000. As you can see, my husband is perfectly in focus, but my girl is a little out of focus.

If I had it to do over again, I’d go with a faster shutter speed and change my focus mode to servo.

Regardless, I love this series of snapshots. Even if they’re not completely perfect, they’re keepers.

Do you keep your “snapshots” or must your photos be absolutely perfect?

  • I keep all of them and need to start deleting!! :) I keep saying I am going to go back through and get rid of photos, but I find some reason to keep way more than I should :) Sounds like I need to go check out this digitalcamfan for some homework assignments :)

    • I’m a bit of a photo hoarder, too. :) I definitely try to delete photos with blur or that immediately aren’t appealing to my eye before I even move them to my computer. It makes the culling process easier.

And yes! Go check out DigitalCamFan. Would be fun to have someone else I “know” doing the assignments, too.
