Re-Learning the Ropes: Slow Shutter Speed

On February 7, 2013 by Yazmin

The 4th assignment from DigitalCamFan is Slow Shutter Speed. Once again, I wasn’t out looking to complete the assignment, but was happy the opportunity appeared!

They other day, while we took the girl to get her sillies out at Catch Air, I noticed a lighted ceiling fan. Perfect tool to create my slow shutter speed shot!

Who doesn’t love a light trail photo? (Except when the setting is as “blah” as this…)

Slow Mo - 1sec f/32 ISO 2000

I didn’t have a tripod with me which is why the lines aren’t completely smooth and cylindrical. Just imagine me laying on the ground of the play area trying to be as still as possible taking these photos.

I’m sure the workers thought I looked silly.

I thought it’d be a fun photo to snap in black and white, but it appears my hand wasn’t as steady with that set.

Guess these aren’t bad for my first set of light trails ever.

Have you shot light trails before? Leave me a link in the comments to your best light trail photo!

  • These are great shots for practicing your shutter speed with light trailing! I’ve tried a few shots at night with car headlights/taillights but I haven’t done it with a tripod which would help tremendously with the final product. :) I like to shoot running water (from a stream, fountain,or such) when practicing with shutter speed. It is neat, the effects you get, the feathery blur and single water droplets standing out, depending on your speed.

    • I wish we had running water close, but then I would have to deal with keeping the girl and the camera out of it at the same time! :D Would love to try my hand at some of those shots.

I love it that you got down on the floor to get the shot! Nice job!
