As I start listing my destash items on Etsy again, I can’t help but take a browse now and then through the jewelry section. I’m sadly disappointed with most of the jewelry. Much of it looks the same.

When I ran across Jesika Jack’s shop, I was so impressed with the focus behind the idea. Her pieces are beautiful. I couldn’t help but write a quick post on her jewelry line.

A few years back I found myself comparing my work with other jewelry designers. There’s such an abundance of us that you can’t walk two feet without bumping into one of us. So I stopped purposefully looking at other’s jewelry cold turkey… with a few exceptions, of course. (A gal’s gotta support her friends!)

Lately, I’ve found myself browsing again. The same things I loved before are still calling my attention… colors, striking combinations and all things floral. I know that’s why I immediately found myself loving the work of Maria at Little Blue Studio. Just look at these beautiful necklaces:

Etsy News: Update Your Tax Settings

I know, I know, I said I was dropping back on the blogging, but this is a bit important if you deal with collecting sales tax for your state. Etsy has announced their much-anticipated new Checkout will support collecting sales tax.

You can go to your Tax Settings to set tax rates for U.S. states, Canadian provinces, and countries where you would like to collect sales tax. You can also indicate whether the tax rate for each region should apply to shipping charges.

Important: If you would like to collect sales tax from buyers who use the new Checkout, you must set your rates by 12 a.m. ET, Thursday, August 26.

This is for everyone, even if you already have PayPal collecting taxes for you as any purchases made with the new Checkout will ignore PayPal’s tax settings.

So, go get to it Etsy sellers!

If you read my last post about lofty goals, you’ll know that I felt like I was a bit overwhelmed with them and my looming pregnancy deadline. Fortunately, one of the goals was much easier to complete than I had imagined.

One of the problems I encountered when moving this website from Textpattern to WordPress was an issue with broken links. I won’t bore you with all the technical details (but in case you want to be bored, you can read the more detailed post on my web development blog).

Suffice to say, I was able to go through 400+ broken links and get them fixed quickly with a handy plug-in. The other 2700+ plus links were handily redirected by WordPress itself. (Thanks WordPress!)

I’m so very happy I was able to find a solution that didn’t take me days to implement and complete. I know many of you have been generous in linking to my site and it’s nice to know that I won’t have to ask you to update your links in order to make sure they are not broken.

So… yay me! *Pat on the back*

Should I go back to Etsy?

My post yesterday was part of the 52 Weeks of Blogging Your Passion. We were meant to ask a question and while I am sincere in wanting to hear your opinions on yesterday’s question, another one came to mind today. (And for those looking for the Color Theory Friday post, I’ll be postponing it until next week.)

As you may know, I decided to close my Etsy shop last year. The tasks of maintaining the shop and participating in teams and the forums really left me stretched thin. However, I’m beginning to wonder if maybe it’s time to open shop again.

I have no plans to join a team or to even peruse the forums. If you’ve ever been part of the forums, you’ll know that it seems there are too many who don’t search for their answers and tons of bitter trolls ruining the fun for everyone. Most of us probably have better things to do with our day than be someone else’s entertainment, so I’m sure you’ll understand why I wouldn’t visit.

Despite all that, I realize without a team to help me promote and without popping my head up in the forums, I’m wondering if it is really worth it. Would it even make up for the time suck of posting on Etsy…

So this is where you come in. My question to you: should I…would you…go back to Etsy and why?

CPSIA Law Suspended for 1 Year!

Congratulations to everyone who took efforts to talk to their congressmen and sign petitions in regards to the CPSIA law going into affect today…If you haven’t heard yet, the law has been postponed for 1 year!

Long story short – you’re still liable if your products are found to have lead, however, until the Commission reviews the rules better, you don’t have to pay for the certification and testing. That’s great news for many small businesses with products targeted towards children…and on a larger scale, for all of us and our economy.

UPDATE 02/10/2009
As soon as I announced my post on Twitter, I got responses saying that I had incorrect information. My apologies on that! For clarification, the law is not suspended! It still went into effect today, however from what I’m being told, while the CPSC is not enforcing currently, your state AG may do just that.

In addition, from the official documents it looks as if you can still be prosecuted if you are reported to have used a material that does not comply with the lead limits, phthalate limits or toy standards.

However, my recommendation to you is to NOT do what I did and get your information from a second source. Go straight to the horse’s mouth:

Today I closed shop on Etsy

That is, I closed my jewelry shop on Etsy. My supply shop is still open.

Spending this holiday season reviewing the past year made me realize that I was spreading myself thin. With so many people on Etsy now (way more than when I started 3 years ago), it’s almost a requirement to post on a daily or multi-daily basis to maintain visibility, to-do lists for team eligibility, maintaining a presence in the forums…all these things are now the neccessity to be successful.

That’s all fine and good, because those who are successful adapt with the changes. However, this has really morphed my jewelry from something I truly enjoyed making and displaying to just another list of tasks to be done for the day. Not to mention the competitiveness of watching store sales/numbers and the jealousy it pulled out of me…especially towards people I would never wish to be that way with. It was all too much.

So with much sadness (and a little tinge of defeat), I’ve removed myself from all the Etsy Teams I belonged to (and have even passed up applying to join a team I admire a ton.) And as much as I hate to say good bye to all the team members who I’ve really come to know and love, I hope you understand my decision.

Thanks to Etsy’s vacation mode, though, I still have the opportunity to come back if I ever change my mind. (A girl’s gotta reserve her rights!) I will also still be selling through my site here…so don’t think I’m going to stop all together. ;)

The 2008 Christmas Wishlist

Everyone is asking me for my Christmas wishlist. I suppose it’s time I delivered.

I will admit, the things I usually want are extremely cost-prohibitive (like a Canon Xsi and a new PowerMac.) However, the following items on my list would be just as welcomed. After all, it is the thought that counts. (And honestly I don’t need gifts – time with friends and family is enough. Thanks mom for teaching me to appreciate the things that truly count. :) )

However, for those who feel compelled to purchase a gift for me, here is my list. All of these items can be found on Etsy shops.

Here’s a tip for anyone who hasn’t shopped on Etsy. If the item is sold, check out the sellers shop to see if they relisted the item. If it’s not relisted, just send the seller a convo to see if they can remake the item. I’m sure you’ll get a quick response!

Thanks to my friend, Danielle, I’ve developed a love affair with purses and clutches. (The shoe affair was already well established by my mom, but I have that under control…mostly.)

My husband used to keep Bath and Body Works in business with all the lovely liquid soaps he’d buy me for holidays and special occasions. I’ve since lost my attraction to them and replaced it with a good old bar of Ivory soap. (Can’t beat that for a fresh clean smell.) However, a gal needs a pretty bar of soap every now and then…and these are right up my alley.

We live in Georgia. Couple that with being self-employed and I don’t get much use out of the scarves I have. However, I see no reason why I shouldn’t continue to build my wardrobe of two scarves, do you? I am from an island, after all, and I do get cold easily. ;)

Have you seen my hair? I have a lot of it…and I do mean A LOT. That’s why I generally end up pulling it all together in a loosely gathered bun. However, if I owned one of these lovely fascinators or hair pins, I just might be more apt to wear it down. Or at least look extra smashing with it all swept up. Then Danielle could make my curls boing to her hearts content.

If you read my blog, you know I’m a techie. Aside from jewelry making, World of Warcraft is my vice. And I can never get enough of computer related items. Seriously…it’s time for a new laptop skin!

Here are a few other things I wouldn’t mind seeing in my stocking. (My ring size is 8 1/2, btw.)

Finally, if you haven’t checked out my Amazon wishlist (there’s a widget for it below), you should. I just added a ton of organizing books that I would love to read…like yesterday! But with it soon being Christmas and all, I’ve decided not to buy them until after the holiday has passed. This way, no one can complain that I always buy everything I want. :)

I hope with this I’ve given enough suggestions as to things I would love to have. Now if only others would make a list like this for me, my shopping would be so easy. Oh, you know who you are… ;)

I’m quite fond of this month’s featured blogger, as she does make an appearance in my blog comments quite often. (Yes, I do take notice!) It’s nice to know that someone other than me reads my blog. hehe

My favorite things about her shop is that each of her items comes with a haiku written specifically for that piece. Many marketing and sales gurus will tell you that a story will sell a piece better than just the stats. I like that she’s taken that concept to the next level by writing accompanying poetry for her beautiful jewelry.

Holiday traditions for me really revolve around food. As a Latina, there was never an occasion where my family wasn’t all huddled in the kitchen cooking, laughing or just plain being ornery. Oh…you say we have a living room…What’s that? :)

One of the topics for this month’s EtsyBlogger’s Street Team carnival called for favorite holiday traditions. I will admit that while J and I do live away from family, that doesn’t stop me from making one of my two favorite desserts during the Holiday season.

Sadly, I don’t have time to get into the specifics of my recipes for these dishes as I’m busy finishing up for my show this weekend, so I’ll just leave you a picture of each of the dishes for your salivatory pleasure:

EtsyBlogger’s Street Team totally rocks! One of the things they decided to do recently was a “Treasure It Forward” box, full of tons of goodies that you can’t use, but maybe someone else can. After closing the list at 51 participants, the box finally made it’s way out into the world around the middle of September.

About two days ago, I came home to find the highly anticipated box on my door step. I may even have squealed with glee. Opening it was like unwrapping a present on Christmas morning. Sweet thoughts of the wondrous things I would encounter as I pulled out bag after bag of supplies flooded my mind. After a little clean up (tons of glass beads got shook up and scattered throughout the box), I sat down to pour over each and every single thing.

There were many wonderful glass beads, fantastic color-comboed polymer clay beads and thread, but what really caught my eye were Leslie of UniqueCharm’s lovely little scented charms. Charming (no pun intended) trinkets wafting with the aromas of pumpkin pie, vanilla and hazelnut continually drew my attention. I really had a hard time leaving any of them in the box for the others!

So, after taking some of the charms (and forcing myself to leave some in there), I put in a bag full of strings, yarn and cord, ready to be used in a multitude of crafts. I also added a bunch of my Totally Indie Coupon packages from group 8 that expire at the end of the year. If they expire before someone makes a purchase, they can at least be used for decoupage. (Only one bead – a large rose quartz heart – did I add to the package…so many beautiful polymer clay beads in there as it is!)

Now it sits in my kitchen, waiting for its trip to Treasures by Tina in Mountain View, California. Makes me wish I was towards the end of the list. I can only imagine what a wonderful mix of things I would have encountered in the box.
